While governor, Ronald Reagan saw a couple UFO's. Lucille Ball recounts a story in her book, "Lucy in the Afternoon", that Ronald Reagan and his wife, Nancy, arrived late one night to a William Holden party. They both excitedly describe seeing a UFO while driving down the coast highway to Los Angeles and stopped to watch the event. The other sighting occurred in 1974 over Bakersfield, California. This story was told by Air Force Colonel Bill Paynter who became the pilot of Reagan's Cessna Citation jet plane following his retirement from the Air Force. During the descent the four people on board watched a strange object appear several hundred yards away. It was a fairly steady light until it began to accelerate and then took off at a 45 degree angle. The UFO went from a normal cruise to a fantastic speed instantly. They didn't file a report on the object because for a long time they considered you a nut if you saw a UFO. But Reagan did discuss the sighting a week later with Norman C. Miller, then Washington bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal.

When he became president, Reagan's handlers went to great lengths to "conceal" the President's assertion that he had seen a flying saucer. But Reagan had the last laugh. During his 8 years as president, UFO comments were inserted to many of his speeches. On 9/21/987 at the UN, Ronald Reagan included this in his speech: "Our differences worldwide would vanish if we were facing an alien threat from outside of this world. And yet I ask you is not an alien force ALREADY among us?"
